Eibon Artist Colloquio Interview is up

Colloquio

1. So Colloquio has been an active experimental/ avant electronic jazzy industrial force.  Tell a bit of were the project as taken you and were you see it heading?
Colloquio took us quite far. We reached the point of no return and now we can only go even further in our aural exploration. In the future we would like to experiment with free-jazz and modular synthesizers, perhaps producing a totally weird instrumental album… we’ll see.

2. There has been a long slumber between releases is there a reason why or just simply needed a break to recharge and focus?
We are not professional musicians, even though we are deeply committed and passionate producing the best music we can. So, answering to your question, between our releases we have to work at our day jobs and then studying and experimenting new music solutions for the next release.
3. You have worked with Eibon records on all your proper recordings over the last decade or so. How has that partnership been and why do you feel this label works so well for Colloquio?
Working with Eibon Records is like being part of a big family, with a friendly relationship and a mutual collaboration between all the label mates. We consider Mauro Berchi, the label manager, a sort of patron for unconventional music acts.
4. You seem to mix soundtracks, jazz,  ambience and drift elements. I find much in common to prjoects like Ulver, Mandible chatter and Dead can dance. Where did these ideas come from in your world?
Listening to many different music genres and experimenting in our recording studios are the main sources to draw new, fresh ideas. We also get inspired by movies (Lynch, Tarkovsky, Jodorowsky are among our favorite filmmakers) and art in general.
5. What musical releases are the members of Colloquio listening too? Are there any unknown gems you could talk about to my readers that may take them on new musical journeys?
We love the music of Coil, Throbbing Gristle, Paolo Conte, Franco Battiato, Fennesz, Murcof, Trentemoller, Tim Hecker, Alva Noto, Le Masque, Arvo Part, David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel... Recently we fell in love with Australian artist Ben Frost: “Theory of Machines” and “By the Throat” are two highly recommended releases.
6. If you were to make videos or a long form dvd what would it look like for Colloquio. I think you would have a very focused goal for this…
We already made a videoclip that perfectly depicts our visual and aesthetic dimension: “Tempo Brucia Tutto” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uau8DuvOTdg). In the future it would be nice to experiment even further with video productions, but also with soundtracks made ad-hoc for movies.
7. Where you are in Italy what is the current avant or experimental music scene like?
In our region, and in Italy in general, a proper experimental scene does not exist. Nevertheless artists like Teho Teardo, Eraldo Bernocchi and Zu managed to achieve a moderate success producing great, unconventional music.
8. Are you a fan of the digital age of music promotion and distro as Eibon seems very anti digital releases. Do you think it helps underground more fringe artists or no?
Digital music promotion is a huge mess, but we believe today there are no alternatives for underground acts. Everything is faster through internet, but we are nostalgic of the good old times when you had to post letters and call by phone to communicate with the rest of the world.
9. Is there a theme or ideal running through out Colloquio albums and releases?
Each listener should find his personal “fil rouge” between our albums.
10. If there was one band or project you would like to see cover a Colloquio song or songs who would it be and why?
It would be interesting to hear a modern-classical music version of our tracks, made by artists such as Arvo Part, Steve Reich or Ennio Morricone. The reason why is that classical music is ageless.
11. Are the duo that work within Colloquio creating music under any other projects or names if so tell us please.
Act Noir is the other project of Sergio, a psychedelic-electro-rock band that everybody should be aware of. Check it out at www.actnoir.com
12. Thank you for your time any closing thoughts here.
